See over 40 site attractions, memorabilia on show in buildings set in natural bushland, the eucalypt plantation in which each tree commemorates individual district pioneers and community families, and ‘Shadows of the Past', a national monument to the efforts of all dry land farmers throughout Australia. Millewa Pioneer Village is open daily.

History

The Millewa has a history that is typical of farming communities throughout the Victorian Mallee. It was opened up to purchase leases for agriculture in the 1920s. When the 1930s Depression and drought hit, the World War II holdings were too small, resulting in many farms amalgamating into larger holdings. This formed more viable farms that could produce high quality hard wheat.

Historical sites and landmarks throughout the area include the Long Plain Pine log water tank at Morkalla, Sunset Pastoral Station shearer's quarters, Mopoke Hut, the Werrimull Catholic Church, and Millewa A historic pumping station near Lock 9.

Travellers' tip

The Millewa is typically an arid landscape. As you drive through the area you will see irrigation around you, but appearances can be deceptive - remember to carry drinking water with you when travelling through the area.
