Beer made locally

While in Mildura don't miss the chance to taste locally brewed beers at the Mildura Brewery Pub. Choose from the four signature naturally brewed beers, and monthly specialty brews, all of which are inspired by and named after local produce, landmarks and stories.

Located in Mildura's restaurant precinct, the Mildura Brewery Pub is housed in the historic Astor Theatre building.

Beers on tap

Mildura Brewery produces four beers, along with monthly specialty beers.

Always on tap at the Mildura Brewery Pub are:

  • Mallee Bull - The brewer's choice, Mallee Bull is a full-bodied and powerful ale with great flavour and length
  • Desert - The ‘flagship beer', this refreshing lager is a premium golden brew designed for the true lager lover
  • Honey wheat - A soft and mellow beer with subtle wheat and (local) honey flavours
  • Sun light - A full flavoured light beer that has a big taste

See the brewing process

When you venture into the Mildura Brewery, make sure you take the time to inspect the 30hl DME three vessel brew house and bottling line that is on full display on the back wall of the ground-floor bar.

The Astor Theatre

The Mildura Brewery Pub is housed in the refurbished art deco Astor Theatre building, once the most popular theatre in town. The Astor opened its doors in late 1924 and by 1937 had seating for nearly 1000 patrons. The Astor was popular in the 1930s and 1940s, but the advent of the drive-in theatre in the 1950s led to its gradual demise until it finally closed in the late 1960s.

When Don Carrazza and his family acquired the Mildura Grand Hotel in 1989, the disused theatre was part of the package. The building was used as a laundry, car park, and a workshop, with some of the front shops leased. The Mildura Brewery Pub was opened in December 2004.

To acknowledge the history of the building, the brewery has retained certain features - the projector room is used as a conference venue and you can see the theatre's screen, which continues to be used, among the brewing vats.

Meet the brewer

Mildura Brewery's Head Brewer Stephen Nelsen grew up learning about beer from his father who worked for the South Australian Brewing Company.

Stephen is a passionate member of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) - a consumer group supporting the tradition and art of creating British ale styles such as bitter, mild, IPA, brown, porter and stout. Stephen has worked in craft breweries in England to produce real ales, and toured more than 40 breweries in mainland Europe to observe and learn different practices and philosophies in the production of continental lagers.

When he arrived in Mildura, Stephen set about making a range of high quality, diverse and surprising brews influenced by those he tasted in Asia and Europe.
