History

Gol Gol was proclaimed as a township in 1866 and quickly became a busy centre. Many hotels were established along the Murray, providing horse change and accommodation facilities. The Gol Gol Inn was an important changing point where up to 200 coach horses could be found at any one time. Coaches were important for communication and transport - conveying the Royal Mail and passengers. Several lines operated in the area including Cobb & Co, Burton Bros, Charters Bros, Kidman Nichols, McMahon and John Hill & Co. Regular coach services to Balranald, Swan Hill, Echuca, Wilcannia, Blanchetown and Mannum connected to the Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide routes.

Riverboats stopped at Gol Gol Wharf, bringing supplies and conveying goods down the river for sale. River crossings were made using punts at Gol Gol.
