Stop off at Neqtar Winery where the cellar door offers tastings of the affordable, quality wines. Continue along the Calder Highway to Red Cliffs, a lovely town which was a soldier settlement established after WWI.
Red Cliffs history
As you enter Red Cliffs, look out for the old Red Cliffs Railway Station that is opposite Big Lizzie, the famous traction engine that was brought to Mildura in 1917. Big Lizzie was commissioned in 1920 to clear the dense mallee in Red Cliffs.
Continue beyond Red Cliffs (towards Ouyen) to the Red Cliffs Steam Train and Station, where you can jump on board and go for a ride on an historic steam train on the first Sunday of the month.
Sample local wine
Nearby Nursery Ridge Estate Winery is a fantastic boutique winery that offers cellar door tastings and sales. Drop in and taste some of their wines.
Lindeman's Winery is located in a picturesque setting and is a great place to relax and enjoy a meal in the garden.
Red Cliffs shops and galleries
Turn around and head back towards Red Cliffs and turn right into Indi Avenue to the main shopping area of Red Cliffs. Cross the channel into Nursery Ridge Road, and turn right into Ovens Avenue to call in at the Carringbush Glass Gallery to appreciate the beauty and skill of handcrafted leadlight and kiln-formed glass pieces.
Natural landmarks
Head back out to Nursery Ridge Road and turn left into Woomera Avenue to the Gully Car Park, a great place to stop and take a walk down to the riverfront to see the majestic Red Cliffs, after which the township got its name.
Water management
