Slow food

Slow Food Mildura is a group that is dedicated to raising awareness of how food is produced, the issues impacting on food production and to celebrating the conviviality of the shared table.

In 2007, a winter solstice dinner serving up seasonal produce, and Picnic Under The Blossom - a spring picnic in an organic orchard - are in the Slow Food Mildura calendar.

Slow Food Mildura runs events that tackle topics which challenge local producers, highlighting innovation and tradition in the production of specialist foods and celebrates of what growers and producers in the region do best.

Slow Food Mildura events have included:

  • Debates about the challenges facing small wine producers in the market dominated by large corporations
  • A tour of the harvesting and production facilities of Sunsalt, a local salt producer
  • A harvest dinner under the vines in a local vineyard
  • A weekend celebration of the grain growing activities in the district.
  • A taste workshop on chocolate and dark beer production
  • A debate about organic food production at the Sunraysia Farmers' Market
  • A taste workshop on Flor Sherry, a product of significance for the district with the aim of making a submission to the Australian Ark of Taste in an effort to save this product from extinction.

Slow Food was formed in 2004, and members have the opportunity to partake of a diverse range of experiences at a discounted price.

About the Slow Food Movement

Slow Food Mildura is part of the international Slow Food movement. The Slow Food movement was founded in 1986 in Europe and is a not-for-profit organisation that supports small-scale food production and distribution. Its ideals are ‘Good, Clean and Fair', which means good taste, environmentally sustainable production methods and a fair price for the raw materials and finished product. Slow Food supports biodiversity and taste education and promotes artisan producers and products through the Ark of Taste.
