Road Conditions

Touring through Mildura and the surrounding region may take you through some remote areas. Forward planning and vigilance are important and will help to ensure your experience is safe. Ensure your vehicle is in excellent mechanical condition before setting out on an outback adventure. Carry spare belts, hoses, emergency water, food and fuel supplies. In the event of a breakdown, or if lost, stay with your vehicle. When travelling on unsealed roads exercise caution and ‘read’ the road well ahead of the vehicle.

Tips for safe driving in the outback include:

Plan your trip
  • Always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.
  • Get a good night's sleep before setting out.
  • Stay somewhere overnight if you are on a long journey.
  • Share the driving.
  • Don't travel for more than 8-10 hours each day.
  • Take power naps when drowsy.
  • Don't drive at times when you normally sleep.
Vehicle
  • Make sure your vehicle is in top mechanical condition.
  • Remain in your vehicle if you break down.
Supplies
  • Carry extra food, fuel, water and vehicle spares.
  • If you travel through the outback in summer, make sure you carry plenty of drinking water.
Roads and tracks
  • Roads and tracks on private property should not be used without first getting permission from the landholder.
  • Leave gates as you found them.
  • Take care at railway crossings - some do not have flashing lights to warn of approaching trains.
  • Large slow-moving agricultural machinery use highways and local roads. Drive with care.
  • Keep alert for wildlife such as kangaroos and emus, especially at dusk and dawn when visibility can be poor.
  • Don't pitch your tent under red gums - their branches are liable to break off without warning in high winds or in very calm, hot conditions.
